Dr. Brian Steg
Dr. Brian Steg was a co-founder of Hickory Cardiology Associates, where he worked from 1983 to July 2011. He earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio and his Bachelor of Arts from the College of Wooster. He completed his fellowship, residency, and internship at Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He is boarded by the American board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology. Dr. Steg is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, American College of Physicians, AmericanCollege of Chest Physicians, and is a fellow of the Society of Coronary Angiography and Intervention. Dr. Steg performs cardiac catheterizations, coronary angioplasty, stenting, pacemakers, peripheral vascular angioplasty and structure for peripheral vascular disease.
Dr. Derek Luney
Dr. Derek Luney worked at Hickory Cardiology Associates, PLLC, from 1996-June 2011 and Cardiology Associates of Anderson from 1995-1996. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA, and his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Mathematics from Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C. Luney completed his fellowship, residency and internship from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, Alabama. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology. Dr Luney performs cardiac catheterizations and also has interest in non invasive evaluation of the heart including echocardiography and nuclear cardiology.
Dr. Luke Byrnes
Dr. Byrnes joined Catawba Valley Cardiology in April of 2012 and is board certified in internal medicine, nuclear cardiology, adult comprehensive echocardiography, cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology. As both an interventional and clinical cardiologist, he is able to help prevent, diagnose and treat a wide range of cardiac diseases.After graduating from New York Medical College in 2003, Dr. Byrnes completed an internal medicine internship and residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan, followed by fellowships in both cardiology and interventional cardiology. He earned both Level II and III certifications with over 300 interventional procedures performed. Prior to joining the staff at CVMC, Dr. Byrnes worked as an interventional cardiologist at Meadville Medical Center, in Meadville, PA. He is a member of the American College of Cardiology and is bi-lingual in English and Spanish.
Lisa Michel, PA-C
Lisa Michel worked at Hickory Cardiology from 2000 to July 2011. She completed her Physician Assistant Master of Science from Aracadia University in Glenside, PA, and her Bachelor of Science in Biology with a concentration in Bioethics from Nazareth College in Pitsford, NY. Professionally, Michel is NCCPA Certified, ACLS Certified, and has been a member of the AAPA from 2000 to the present.
Sara Paul, DNP-FNP
Sara Paul received a nursing degree from Florida State University in 1981 and a master’s degree in cardiovascular nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1986. She completed her nurse practitioner studies at Medical University of South Carolina in 1995, and in 2010 she received her doctoral degree in nursing from Duke University. She has been an advanced practice nurse for 27 years as a Clinical Nurse Specialist and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Nursing. Since 1995, she has been a nurse practitioner managing heart failure patients. From 2002-2013, she was the Director of the Heart Function Clinic at Hickory Cardiology. Sara is a founding member of the American Association of Heart Failure nurses, and is active in the leadership of the Heart Failure Society of America and the American Heart Association. Sara has numerous publications in books and journals, and is the editor of two nursing textbooks. She regularly speaks at conferences, and currently sits on the editorial board of three professional journals.
