Doctor Paul W. Sykes, along with Physician Assistants Adam Benfield and Caitlin Heredia, welcome you to their Family Medicine practice. The top priority of the Catawba Valley Family Medicine – South Hickory staff is to help you and your loved ones prevent illness and maintain physical and emotional well-being by providing medical care and recommending healthy lifestyle choices. The providers manage acute and chronic illnesses, treat acute injuries, perform minor office surgeries and, when necessary, refer patients to an appropriate specialist. Dr. Paul W. Sykes

Sykes_Paul_lab_Oct14_4x6After receiving his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia, Dr. Sykes completed his internship and his family practice residency at the Medical College of Georgia. He is board certified in Family Medicine. Prior to joining the group, he practiced in Lincolnton, NC for 21 years. Licensed by the State of North Carolina Board of Medicine, he is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians.




Adam Benfield, Physician Assistant


Prior to attaining a Master of Physician Assistant Studies at Gardner-Webb University, Adam Benfield earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Western Carolina University where he also played varsity baseball and was on the Dean’s list from 2010 to 2013. Adam gained medical experience caring for patients working at a family medicine practice in Fallston, NC where he provided primary care to an average of 20+ patients per day. He also worked with a team of hospitalists at Cleveland Regional Medical Center where he gained experience in the admission and hospital management of ICU, PCU, telemetry and observation level patients. Adam maintains active memberships with the North Carolina Association of Physician Assistants and the American Academy of Physician Assistants.

Caitlin Heredia, Physician Assistant


 A community wellness advocate, Caitlin Heredia graduated in May 2016 from the Physician Assistant Program at Gardner-Webb University where she previously earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology. While attending Gardner -Webb, Caitlin held the position of University Physician Assistant Student Society President. Caitlin finds rewarding opportunities to share her knowledge of health and disease prevention as a leader in community outreach programs with a passion of serving homeless and underserved patients. Her diverse clinical experience includes mental health, pediatrics, emergency medicine, OB/GYN, family medicine and internal medicine with a background of positions with Carolinas Healthcare System in Shelby, Kings Mountain, and Rutherfordton – all in North Carolina. She is a member of the North Carolina Association of Physician Assistants and the American Academy of Physician Assistants.
